Earth Hour began like a local initiative from WWF-Australia. March 31st, 2007 in Sydney, 2,2 million people extinguished their lights during one hour. The call of the WWF was then followed each year in a more intense way:

• in 2008, 500 million people took part in 35 countries.
• in 2009, 4000 cities and communes and nearly 20 000 companies distributed in 88 countries. In Belgium, Earth Hour rejoined more than 500 000 people, 329 companies and 193 cities to its cause.
• in 2010, more than 4000 cities in 125 countries took part. Cities such as Rome, Paris, New York, Manila, Mexico City and many famous monuments were plunged in the black: pyramids of Egypt, the City prohibited in Beijing, the Memorial for Hiroshima in Japan, Times Square in New York… In Belgium, it is the equivalent of 750 000 households which turned off their lights, but also 324 cities and communes, and 671 companies, of which Coca Cola, Canon, IKEA, McDonalds… and OSL for the 2nd consecutive year. An enormous success!

Earth hour thus became over the years the most massive action of support of the fight against the climate change, on a world level, but also in Belgium.

Last year, 1 billion people throughout the world extinguished the lights.

This year, still, OSL wants to show that by linking us around a common objective, we can make move the things and offer to the future generations an alive planet.
